Is Dak Lak Safe? Health and Safety Tips for Travelers

Boulders and forest in the mountains of Dak Lak

Dak Lak is a safe and friendly place to travel. Serious crime against visitors is rare, and people in the villages are welcoming. Most problems travelers face here are the same as anywhere in Vietnam: traffic, heat and the occasional upset stomach.

Traffic

Roads are busy with motorbikes and trucks, especially on the main highways. Cross streets slowly and steadily. On our cycling tours we use quieter country roads where we can, and a support vehicle stays close to the group. Always wear a helmet when riding a bike or motorbike.

Heat and Sun

Even on the cooler plateau the midday sun is strong. Drink plenty of water, use sunscreen and plan active things for the morning and late afternoon. Our tours include a long lunch break for this reason.

Food and Water

  • Do not drink tap water. Bottled or filtered water is easy to find.
  • Busy local restaurants with fresh food are usually the safest choice.
  • Bring basic medicine for stomach problems, just in case.

Insects

Mosquitoes are more common in the rainy season. Use repellent and long sleeves at dusk. In the forest, leech socks are useful during and after rain.

Rural and Border Areas

Parts of Dak Lak near the Cambodian border, including some areas of Yok Don National Park, need special permits. National parks also require entrance tickets and, for trekking, a local ranger. We arrange all of this for our guests.

Before You Go

  • Buy travel insurance that covers cycling and trekking.
  • Keep a copy of your passport with you; hotels and homestays need it to register guests.
  • Save our phone number and your hotel address in your phone.
