How to Get to Buon Ma Thuot and Get Around Dak Lak

Mountain road over Phuong Hoang Pass in Dak Lak

Buon Ma Thuot is the capital of Dak Lak and the starting point for every trip in the province. It is easy to reach by air or by road from the main cities of southern and central Vietnam.

By Air

Buon Ma Thuot Airport is about 8 km from the city centre. Domestic airlines fly here from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City every day, and from some other cities on certain days of the week. The flight from Ho Chi Minh City takes about one hour. A taxi or our driver can take you to your hotel in about 15 to 20 minutes.

By Road

  • From Ho Chi Minh City: about 8 to 9 hours by sleeper bus or car.
  • From Nha Trang: about 4 hours over the mountains.
  • From Da Lat: about 4 to 5 hours, passing Lak Lake on the way.
  • From Quy Nhon or Pleiku: about 4 to 6 hours.

Sleeper buses are cheap and comfortable enough for a night journey. A private car with a driver is faster, safer and lets you stop wherever you like.

Getting Around Dak Lak

  • In the city: taxis and ride-hailing apps work well in Buon Ma Thuot.
  • Out of the city: public transport to places like Lak Lake, Buon Don or the waterfalls is slow and irregular. A car with a driver is the easiest way to get around.
  • By bike: the countryside is made for cycling. Join one of our guided rides with a support vehicle.
