Most visitors come to Dak Lak for coffee, lakes and villages, but the hills around Lak Lake and the forests of the province are wonderful for walking. If you like hiking, it is worth planning a trek.
Where to Trek
- Chu Yang Lak: the forested mountain behind Lak Lake. A two day trek through bamboo and forest to the peak, with a night on the mountain and views over the lake. See the Chu Yang Lak Peak Trek.
- Around Lak Lake: easy walks between M’nong villages, rice fields and low hills, with nights at Y Sol House by the lake.
- Yok Don National Park: flat walks through open dry forest along the Serepok River.
- Pal Sol: forest trails to a wide, open grassland in Krong Bong, with a night of camping.
Difficulty Levels
Village walks around Lak Lake are easy and suit almost everyone. Yok Don and Pal Sol are moderate. The Chu Yang Lak trek is challenging: 5 to 7 hours a day on steep, sometimes slippery forest trails, so you need good fitness and comfortable hiking shoes.
Seasons
Trek in the dry season, from about November to April. In the rainy season trails become slippery, leeches come out and the peaks are often in cloud.
Guides and Permits
Every trek is private, with an English-speaking guide and a local team who know the trails. National parks require entrance tickets and, in some areas, a ranger; we arrange all of this. See our trekking tours.
