Staying in a Homestay in Dak Lak: What to Know

Buon Don in Dak Lak

Spending a night with a family in Buon Don or by Lak Lake is, for many of our guests, the most memorable part of their trip. It is simple and personal, a chance to see daily life up close and share a meal with your hosts.

What a Homestay Is Like

Homestays are family homes, sometimes traditional stilt houses, with a room or shared sleeping space set aside for guests. Expect a mattress, bedding and a mosquito net, and a shared bathroom. It is simple and clean, not a hotel.

Food and Evenings

Dinner is cooked by the family from local ingredients: rice, vegetables, fish from the lake or river, grilled chicken and soups. On some evenings your hosts may offer rice wine. Your guide translates and helps the conversation along.

Being a Good Guest

  • Take off your shoes before going into the house
  • Ask before taking photos of people
  • Try a little of every dish; it is fine to say no politely to more
  • Keep noise down at night; village days start early
  • A small gift from home is welcome but never expected

What to Bring

A small bag with a change of clothes, toiletries, a towel and a torch is enough. See our full packing list, or browse our homestay tours.
